What is Mission Charter School?
Mission Charter School, located in central Phoenix, has just completed 11 years of educating students within a small, unique family environment.
What is a charter school?
Charter schools are public schools that are innovative and responsive to students’ needs while still being held accountable for improved student achievement. Arizona is home to 509 charter schools that enroll more than 101,000 students. Fully 25% of the state’s public schools are charter schools, and 10% of all public-school students are enrolled in charter schools-the highest percentage for any state in the nation.
They were created in 1994 in Arizona to:- Provide a learning environment that will improve pupil achievement
- Provide additional academic choices for parents and pupils
Philosophy of Mission Charter School
Our mission is to cultivate creative, motivated, and compassionate learners who use determination and innovative thinking to build a strong academic foundation in the twenty-first century learning environment.
All About Us
Mission Charter School campuses are located in central and northwest Phoenix and our high school is located in the western part of the city.
Mission Charter School offers a unique educational approach that encourages intellectual risk-taking, creativity, collaboration, authenticity, and empathy and places these qualities on par with other educational goals and measures for academic achievement.
We are committed to keeping a sense of wonder, play, and joy alive in our classrooms throughout each child's educational trajectory.
Ours is a diverse community with a shared passion for learning. Teachers, students, and parents work collaboratively to create a rich, deeply integrated educational environment that celebrates the unearthing of great questions and big ideas.
Mission Charter School is a place where every member of our community grows together in inspiring ways and where each child's voice is heard and valued.
As informative as our website is, there is no substitute for visiting our classrooms and witnessing the interactions between teachers and children that make Mission Charter School such a powerful learning community.

CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION
Our educational model is made up of two components (see image above): the Core Curriculum, which represents the basic academic subjects our program will cover, and the Values, which describe our approach and the key elements we want to "connect" to the subjects in our curriculum.
Each of our values relate in some way to the idea of connection, whether it be the connection to a community, to one's emotions, to one's artistic voice, to one's body, to the world, to one's interests, or to one's sense of joy and wonder. Our model emerged out of a desire to achieve a new kind of balance between academic rigor and academic enchantment. We believe that both are essential attributes of a truly exceptional education.
Our programs are founded on the belief that our most exuberant creativity and fruitful learning spring from a place of emotional and physical well-being and a deep connection to a caring and respectful community. The social dynamic of our program is one in which students, teachers and parents are all learning and growing together and where each child's unique voice and interests are valued.
We celebrate intellectual risk-taking, collaboration, authenticity and empathy, and consider these qualities to be as important as the conventional measures of academic achievement.
We design both our curriculum and our environment with the goal of nurturing the innate sense of curiosity and wonder that children bring into our program.
Our classrooms are dynamic and engaging spaces that facilitate robust exploration, personal expression, group collaboration, open communication and active play. We encourage children to shape and transform their environment by experimenting with light, sound, and unique materials.
Our children are provided opportunities for expression and exploration using project based curriculum intertwined with all core subjects and technology.
Documentation of children's works-in-progress is prominently displayed in each classroom, making the experience of learning visible, and further reflecting our respect for children's natural ability to create and develop ideas.
We also encourage students to learn from the world outside their classrooms and to take advantage Phoenix’s weather and cultural landscape.
In addition to participating in class field trips and regular neighborhood explorations, children and teachers design research missions that relate to their project work.
Teachers
The teachers at Mission Charter School bring the system of beliefs of progressive education alive in the classrooms through a deep knowledge of developmental theory and cutting-edge educational practices.
Our approach is aligned with constructivist theory that demonstrates children learn best by 'constructing' their own knowledge in a playful and intellectually rich social environment. Our teachers guide and mentor this process of inquiry and then artfully integrate core subject matter into it.
As students develop skills and broaden their knowledge, our teachers add new challenges that continuously propel children into that special mindset where optimal learning takes place. Our teachers also provide the kind of 'scaffolding' that helps children grow in new directions. Equally important are the moments when teachers pull away and let the children enjoy the satisfaction and self-confidence that comes from autonomous mastery.
We believe that these inquiry-based teaching methods are unsurpassed in their ability to fuel deep and powerful learning. Perhaps even more importantly, we believe these practices ignite in our students an intrinsic passion for learning and growth that will last a lifetime.
We are committed to supporting the needs of the whole child and we believe in finding the learning style that suits each child best. We teach our students to reflect upon their own experiences as well as those of others so that they can gain the combination of self-awareness and social insight that will empower them to engage in the world with confidence and compassion.
Our program cultivates healthy, capable and open-minded inquirers who seek out different points of view to enhance their own perspectives. We believe the knowledge, skills and creative abilities that our students develop will prepare them to meet the challenges of the 21st century and become powerful and positive forces.
